Compassion is usually the motivation that drives students to pursue medicine, but Dr. Richard Usatine, professor of UT Health San Antonio, said that under the pressure of long periods of time, testing, and clinical rotation, the initial motivation sometimes disappears. This is where the school community clinic comes in.
Usatine and other professors work with medical students in free clinics to provide services for homeless people, refugees, LGBTQ people, and women who are rehabilitated, hoping to not only hone the students' diagnostic and treatment skills, but also hone their humanity. "We want them to firmly grasp their compassion and use it throughout their medical careers," Usatine said.
This is Usatine's enthusiasm that has honed his enthusiasm while working with the California National Health Service after completing his residence. Later, he completed a medical education scholarship and became the medical director of a homeless clinic run by UCLA students. He moved to San Antonio in 2003, and in 2005 helped open the first free clinic at the San Antonio University Health Center, where he continued to serve and train students. "I work in medicine because I can make a difference and work for social justice," said Usatine, who also authored 10 books and was the founding director of the University Health System Skin Clinic and an underserved family medicine dermatology scholarship program Director program.
Since all the attention in recent years has been on the opioid crisis, Usatine said it’s easy to forget that those who struggle with drug addiction-like the women they treat at Alpha Home every Monday night-also wish for themselves. Women whose children or young people lead a better life are looking for new beginnings. "The women are very grateful," he said. "They are often at the bottom of their lives and often neglect medical care, so they come to us for help."
To thank him for his work, Alpha Home named its clinic Usatine Health Center in 2016. "I feel very honored," he said. "I like working there and working with students. It's just very rewarding."

If Dr. Maria Stephanie R. Jardeleza can emphasize one thing to diabetic patients, it is that they need an ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon at the San Antonio Eye Center specializes in diseases and surgeries of the retina and vitreous. She said that the first time she saw a diabetic customer was after their vision loss. "If you are diagnosed with diabetes, please make an appointment for an eye clinic," she said. "40% to 50% (of patients) came to me very late and it was difficult to catch up."
Jardeleza was born in Manila and is a third-generation ophthalmologist. She said that she discovered her passion for this profession very early when her father asked her to follow her to the clinic for surgery. She received her medical degree from the University of the Philippines, then completed her residency training at Boston University, and received scholarships at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital.
It was in San Antonio where Jardeleza initially moved to work at UT Health in San Antonio, and she began to see a large number of diabetic patients with vision loss, which could lead to blindness. "If your sugar is not controlled and your diet is not improved, no treatment will prevent this from happening," Jardeleza said, adding that patients need to undergo dilated examinations every year. "If someone changes their lifestyle, I can restore their vision or help them maintain their vision."
Being able to work with patients to improve their lives makes Jardeleza passionate about her work. One of her favorite patients so far is a woman who came to see her after losing sight in one eye and losing sight in the other eye due to diabetes. The patient understands that her lifestyle needs to be changed to make any ophthalmological treatment valuable, and agrees to reset her habits. In the end, she became independent after having to rely on her daughter as a caregiver-she achieved Jardeleza's goal. "Her eyes have restored 20/20 vision," Jardeleza said.

Dr. Adam Harris likes to tell his patients that he cares about them like family — the father of two likes his family. Harris founded the San Antonio Orthopedic Specialist in 2002 so that he can focus on each patient; he sees about 25 people on non-surgical days instead of 40 or more patients who can be scheduled for a day elsewhere. "When my patients and I are in the room, they will concentrate," said Harris, who grew up in California and attended medical school. "This is a custom method."
Harris remembers that when he was a child, he first became interested in the study of gait or the way people walked. At that time, he was reading his father's book, a plastic surgeon who specialized in shoulders. Nevertheless, when he entered medical school, he thought he might study cardiology. However, during the clinical rotation, he realized his passion for orthopedics, after which he focused his training and more than 20 years of professional career on knees and hips. He completed his residency training at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke Medical Center in Chicago, and stayed in Chicago to receive two scholarships, one for adult joint reconstruction and the other for research focusing on the biochemistry of articular cartilage.
In San Antonio, Harris is known for using minimally invasive, tissue-preserving methods for hip and knee surgery, and he recently obtained a patent for the instruments he used in these procedures. "The more force you exert during the operation, the more painful they will be in the recovery process," he said. "If you can complete the operation with subtle movements, then the pain will be less." He said that patients who undergo hip and knee replacements through minimally invasive methods usually get up and walk on the same day, adding that only during non-surgical treatments. Surgery should only be performed when the treatment is unsuccessful. The ages of the patients he treated ranged from 18 to 95 years old, but most of his patients were in their 50s, 60s and 70s. "This week I strive to be a better doctor than last week and the previous week," he said.

When Dr. Gail Tomlinson decided to specialize in pediatric oncology and hematology, she thought it was a way to ensure she was always learning while still having a direct impact on patients.
"Cancer treatment is an area of constant change and continuous improvement," said Tomlinson, UT Health San Antonio Professor of Pediatrics and Greehey Professor of Genetics and Cancer. "I think this is an opportunity to learn."
Tomlinson received his medical degree and doctorate from the George Washington University School of Medicine. Before completing an internship and residency at the National Children's Medical Center in Washington, DC, he received a degree in biochemistry from Duke University at Dallas Medical Center. Before being recruited to San Antonio in 2007, Tomlinson taught at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Through all her research and practice, Tomlinson said that she is particularly interested in the genetic susceptibility of cancer, dedicated to understanding which genetic factors put children at risk, and to make pediatricians and families aware of when to monitor something .
She said that usually, before the tumor is found, the child looks very healthy.
"We still have a long way to go to optimize early detection, but in recent years, we have learned more about different genes and their interactions."

At the age of 16, Dr. Mina Chrysopoulo announced to his parents that he would become a plastic surgeon. "Entering the medical field is something I have to do to become a plastic surgeon," said Chrysopoulo, who is called a "Doctor." C, "President of PRMA Plastic Surgery." This is not a situation where I want to be a doctor and then figure out what I should be. "
Growing up, Chrysopoulo said that his father was a history buff, and he spent a few hours reading articles about World War I and World War II. While reading with his father, Chrysopoulo learned that the first plastic surgeries were performed on people injured during the First World War. He was fascinated by it.
Chrysopoulo grew up in London and studied at University College London School of Medicine. A plastic surgery professor told him that the United States would provide more opportunities for his field of choice, so Chrysopoulo moved and completed training and scholarships in Texas and Wisconsin.
Nevertheless, although he knew he wanted to be a plastic surgeon, Chrysopoulo said that before one of his relatives had breast cancer and realized the need for reconstructive surgery options, he was not sure which type of surgery he would specialize in. Operation.
Now at PRMA Plastic Surgery, Chrysopoulo focuses on breast reconstruction, offering women an alternative to implants, and treating patients traveling to San Antonio from all over the country (and sometimes internationally).
Chrysopoulo said that in the past few years, many women who have experienced breast cancer did not even know that reconstruction is an option. Others think that implants are the only surgery they can perform.
Alternatively, the deep lower abdominal perforator (DIEP) flap surgery uses tissue from a woman's stomach and includes nerve reconstruction so that the woman can feel, which was not possible in the past during reconstruction surgery, he said. "We have done more DIEP flap operations than anyone in the world," he said.
Chrysopoulo said that he operated on women who had breast cancer and had undergone bilateral mastectomy and women who had chosen to have their breasts removed because they found that they had the BRCA gene, indicating that there is a genetic risk of breast cancer. He is a member of the PRMA team of seven surgeons, and he said they also perform operations on men who have survived breast cancer.

Dr. Sylvia Botros-Brey grew up in the medical profession in Eastern Texas. Her father is a urologist and her uncle is a gynecologist. Although she had a vague concept of the meaning of these professions, it was not until she worked with patients during her medical training that she realized that she wanted to pursue the integration of these two fields.
"Fundamentally speaking, what really attracted me to urology and gynecology was the fragility and needs of the patients we saw," she said. "This is an underserved area."
Botros-Brey is now the Director of Women's Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. His goal is to help patients feel at ease when seeking treatment to solve any problems they may encounter-even if they are difficult to mention. "As providers, our response may largely determine the future," Botros-Brey said, explaining that she sees women dealing with issues such as pelvic floor disease, urinary incontinence, or frequent urinary tract infections (UTI) . "You always hear,'This is normal, or this is just what happens when you have children or you grow old.' I usually just say,'You know, it's not normal, if you want, we can help you.'"
Botros-Brey said that people think her job is only suitable for older women, but she also treats young women with recurrent urinary tract infections or frequent urination, new mothers with leaking urine or pelvic floor problems. Botros-Brey said that one-third of women will suffer from pelvic floor disease in their lifetime.
When a woman asked a question that was hard to talk about, Botros-Brey wanted to make sure it was resolved and stated that the options they offered ranged from modest behavior changes all the way to reconstructive surgery. "There are always things we can do to help," she said.
