Madhya Pradesh Medical Education Minister Vishvas Kailash Sarang said on Wednesday that in view of the increase in mucormycosis or black fungus cases among COVID-19 patients, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to launch a "nasal endoscopy" campaign.

The campaign aims at early detection and treatment of mucormycosis, a rare but dangerous fungal infection.

“In view of the increase in mucormycosis cases among COVID-19 patients, we decided to launch a nasal endoscopy campaign to detect and treat this disease only at the grassroots level,” a public relations official quoted Salang as saying.

He said that the government will provide free nasal endoscopy for COVID-19 patients and COVID-19 survivors admitted to regional hospitals and government medical schools in the past two months.

Nasal endoscopy is a procedure that uses an endoscope to examine the nasal cavity and sinus passages.

The official said that the inventory of equipment needed for nasal endoscopy in medical schools will be increased.

He said that the Otolaryngology (ENT) Expert Association also agreed to free 15 days of nasal endoscopy for recovered patients.

The Otolaryngology Association will appoint a coordinator to perform nasal endoscopy in all cities in Madhya Pradesh.

He said: "A case study of black fungus will also be conducted in the process to understand whether this infection is widespread in urban or rural areas."

He said that he also issued instructions to the medical school to perform nasal endoscopy on willing patients and set up separate operating rooms in his institution for COVID-19 and non-COVID 19 patients.

At the same time, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan has instructed the establishment of a special working group composed of the Minister of Health, the Minister of Medical Education, ENT specialists and the chief secretaries/chief secretaries of other relevant departments to arrange the treatment of black fungus.

The official added that CM also instructed the working group to start operations immediately.

According to doctors, mucormycosis is mainly seen in COVID-19 patients with diabetes. Symptoms include headache, fever, pain under the eyes, congestion of the nasal cavity or sinuses, and partial loss of vision. PTI
